What do we mean by prayer and holding someone in the Light? Adult Religious Education
April 18, 2021 @ 9:00 am – 10:30 am
On Sunday, April 18, 2021 at 9 a.m., we invite you to a conversation: What do we mean by prayer and holding someone in the Light? Just as we have done in previous Adult Religious Education Zoom sessions, we will use worship-sharing (click here for guidelines) first in small groups, followed by reflection by everyone in attendance together. To prepare for the conversation, please watch from the Quakerspeak series sponsored by Friends Journal, “The Prayer Life of Quakers,” presented by David Johnson, an Australian Friend (6:16 minutes).
Here’s another clip (6:41 minutes) you may also find of interest from the same series, “Quakers and the Light,”
A Friends General Conference (FGC) bookmark titled “Quakers and Prayer” proposes,
During or after worship, a Friend may ask the group to “hold someone in the Light.” The person may be sick, dealing with difficult life circumstances, struggling spiritually, or working to serve others. To hold a person in the Light, imagine them being held in God’s loving presence and offer prayers and love for them. Holding an individual or a group of people in the Light is often part of our practice of prayer.
As your time allows, you may also wish to consider the Pendle Hill Pamphlet # 382, “Holding One Another in the Light,” by Marcelle Martin. To order, contact pendlehill.org What have been your practices of prayer, of holding someone in the Light? We look forward to yet another lively, thoughtful hour/hour and a half together.
